THE LUNAR GATEWAYS
A Sacred Journey Through the Moon’s Phases
The Moon moves through her eternal cycle—dark to light, light to dark—each phase a doorway into a different quality of consciousness. Just as the 22 Gateways of the Fool’s Journey guide you through the spiral of awakening, the lunar phases offer a monthly rhythm of descent and return, a miniature version of the great cycle of transformation.
To work with the Moon is to align yourself with the oldest clock on Earth. Before calendars, before schedules, before the frantic pace of modern life, there was only this: the darkening and brightening of the night sky, the pulling and releasing of tides, the quiet knowing that what disappears always returns.
Each phase is not merely a point in time but a gateway—a specific energetic state that invites a particular kind of inner work. When you practice with the Moon, you are not performing ritual at the Moon. You are synchronizing your own rhythms with the rhythm that underlies all life. You are remembering that you, too, are cyclical. You, too, have seasons of brightness and seasons of withdrawal. You, too, are allowed to rest, to grow, to release, to begin again.
This guide offers a complete resource for each of the eight lunar phases. For each, you will find:
- The Energetic Quality – What this phase asks of you and offers you
- An Affirmation – Words to carry with you through the phase
- A Simple Ritual – Practical steps to honor the gateway
- A Meditation Practice – Guided inner work for the phase
- A Journal Prompt – Questions to deepen your reflection
- Correspondences – Crystals, herbs, colors, and elements that align with this energy
- Gateway Connection – Which of the 22 stages this lunar phase most closely mirrors
There is no wrong way to work with the Moon. Some phases will call to you more strongly than others. Some months you will do elaborate rituals; other months you will simply glance up at the sky and breathe. Both are enough. Both are the path.
The Moon does not judge how you receive her light. She simply offers it, cycle after cycle, waiting patiently for you to remember that you are part of her rhythm.

WORKING WITH THE MOON: A SIMPLE PRACTICE
If you are new to lunar practice, do not feel overwhelmed by the richness of the material above. The Moon does not require elaborate ritual. She requires only your attention.
- Notice the Moon. Each day, look at the sky. See what phase she is in. This alone is enough—simply paying attention, simply remembering that you are part of a larger cycle.
- Keep a lunar journal. Note the phase, your energy level, your emotions, your dreams. Over time, you will begin to see your own patterns—how you expand and contract, how you move through your own cycles.
- Choose one phase to honor. You do not need to work with all eight. Choose the phase that calls to you most strongly—perhaps the New Moon for new beginnings, or the Full Moon for celebration—and simply show up for that one each month.
- Let the Moon teach you. After months or years of attention, you will begin to internalize the lunar wisdom. You will feel the approach of the Full Moon in your body. You will know, without looking, when the New Moon is near. This is not magic—it is simply attunement. It is what humans have always known.
THE MOON AND THE 22 GATEWAYS
Each lunar phase corresponds to a gateway on the Fool’s Journey. Working with the Moon is one way of working with these archetypal energies—of embodying them, experiencing them, letting them move through you in the natural rhythm of the month.
| Lunar Phase | Gateway | The Lesson |
|---|---|---|
| New Moon | To be defined | To be defined |
| Waxing Crescent | To be defined | To be defined |
| First Quarter | To be defined | To be defined |
| Waxing Gibbous | To be defined | To be defined |
| Full Moon | To be defined | To be defined |
| Waning Gibbous | To be defined | To be defined |
| Last Quarter | To be defined | To be defined |
| Waning Crescent | To be defined | To be defined |
As you deepen your lunar practice, you may find that certain phases call you more strongly than others—that you are, in this season of your life, a New Moon person or a Full Moon person or a Waning Crescent person. Honor this. The Moon has many faces, and you are allowed to love one more than another.
But over time, if you stay with her, you will come to love them all. You will come to see that the darkness is as necessary as the light, that the waning is as sacred as the waxing, that the cycle needs every phase to be complete.
Just as you do.
A FINAL BLESSING
Moon above us,
Moon within us,
You who wax and wane,
Who disappear and return,
Who hold the tides in your invisible hand—Teach us to trust the cycle.
Teach us to rest in darkness.
Teach us to grow toward light.
Teach us to release when the time comes.May we remember,
In the full brightness of our becoming,
That we will wane again.
And may we remember,
In the deep darkness of our unknowing,
That we will wax again. You are the mirror of our own nature:
Always changing, always whole,
Always returning to yourself. So be it.
So it is.
So we walk,
Phase by phase,
Cycle by cycle,
Toward the light we have always been.
